Alex Fontaine was born in Orleans, France, and spent his childhood between the Paris suburbs and Madagascar. Deciding to lend his natural creativity and eye for design to the beauty world, Alex completed his hairdressing apprenticeship in Paris at Jean Louis David International, followed by 20 years as a top hairdresser at the world-renowned Claude Maxime Mondial on the Champs-Elysees. His clients included French diplomats, the social elite and celebrities, as well as many Washingtonians traveling in France. From them, and personal visits to the U.S., he fell in love with American culture and felt he could find his personal creative balance in Washington, DC, which he describes as a “little Paris.”
Alex made the decision to join his brother who was living in the United States, and in 1999 he relocated to Cristophe Salon in Washington, DC, a favorite salon of clients demanding high end services and style.
Alex specializes in precision hair cutting, creative updos, highlights and color. He was one of the first hair design professionals in the nation’s capital to practice the balayage technique of highlighting; in balayage, hair is “painted” by hand and gives a moreflowing, natural effect than foil highlights.
Combining his expertise in style, technique, and discretion, Alex is often contacted by visiting dignitaries, movie stars, and Washington’s A-list of business and social leaders. Alex has provided hair design to such luminaries as First Lady Hillary Clinton, Eva Longoria, King Abdullah of Jordan, Maria Menounos, Paula Zahn and Victoria Kennedy.
